Local Business Spotlight
October 2003

by Amy Ujazdowski

If you are looking for some old fashioned goodies, I have found the place. Located in the center of Brookville is a true example of a blast from the past, McCabe Drug Soda Fountain Shop.

As I took my first step into the shop, my eyes consumed the front area of the store. A country setting touches every space from wall to wall; however, the front is a gift shop filled with novelty items, plush animals, and greeting cards. Browsing around could take a while, but this is a sure place to find a small gift for that special someone.

A platform sits in the rear of the store screaming for attention from people of all ages. The history stored in the small area is enough to send anybody back in time. The shiny counter top and refrigeration system of the fountain are both from a shop open in the 1940’s. Reflecting them are little round tables with heart-shaped chairs, all original from a storage warehouse in Pittsburgh.

Nevertheless, the fun does not stop there. The walls are full of black and white photos showing the changes of Brookville over the years, possibly a century. Starting with the birth of Brookville, pictures tell the tale of a mining community as it grew into a modern place to live. If you look close enough, you may even recognize a place or two. A storybook of imagination rests on those walls, only your eyes can tell the tale.

Today, the Soda Fountain Shop carries fourteen different flavors of Perry’s Premium Ice Cream; all ready to be home-made into a sundae, milkshake, or ice cream soda, especial the famous “Root Beer Float.” Also, every week features a new sundae special for only $1.50, an inexpensive way to try something different!

Need to stay awake? The Shop is proud to announce the recent addition of a cappuccino and coffee machine. Again, premium blends for those tiny taste buds.

Owners of other newborn shops have traveled many miles to Brookville to use McCabe’s shop as an example for their own design. The shop definitely fits the historical puzzle of Brookville. Russ Wieszczyk, owner of McCabe Drug Store, must be satisfied with the success of the soda shop, for it has been open five successful years and counting.

Everybody is welcome to relax and enjoy one of their favorite old-fashioned treats. The shop is an easy find across the street from the courthouse on 229 Main St in Brookville. Operation hours are:

• Monday – Friday: 9a.m. to 6p.m. • Saturday: 9a.m. to 4p.m. • Sundays and Holidays: closed

“We’re a small, old-fashioned soda fountain, located in the heart of Brookville, offering old style ice cream treats of many years ago. Come back and relive the past.”
