Local Businss Spotlight
November 2003

by Amy Ujazdowski

Does your mouth water for a home-cooked meal? Do you hunger for a laid-back atmosphere where you know just about everybody?

Owners, Barb Marshall and Sue Gourley, had the same cravings five years ago when they opened the Breezeway Café on Main St. in Brookville. The two, along with Barb’s sister, Nora Carl, run the small café with nothing, but home-cooked attitude.

The space originally housed West King’s Dining Room for approximately 25 to 30 years. Barb worked there for 15 years and Sue worked at other restaurants, both learning the business. As all good things come to an end, so did the West King, only to leave space for a brighter future for new ownership.

The Breezeway started as a small soup and sandwich shop, but the menu eventually expanded to hold more delicious, mouth watering entrées and desserts, all home-made to perfection. The main goal is customer satisfaction. That has already been achieved by the many regulars who join the staff almost everyday.

Also, to keep things interesting, the Breezeway offers daily specials to tease those taste buds into wanting more. Plus, an endless cup of coffee is only $1.00, so you may want to stop by to have a few before work.

On another note, the Holidays touch the café with love and joy. During every Thanksgiving season, customers may donate money by purchasing a paper Christmas stocking. The donating patron or organization writes their name on the stocking and it is hung around the café. Gifts for underprivileged children are purchased with the donated money, and protected by a proud Christmas tree in the restaurant, until later distribution.

Currently, Barb and Sue are happy with the way things turned out. As of now, the only future plans are to keep the relaxed atmosphere.
